we're already not the same.
A two lane road cuts into the Mojave. His twin is in the passenger seat. They have been driving six hours and said almost nothing, because the silence is the conversation. Solm says, we're not coming back the same. And he answers without looking over.
we're already not the same. this is just the moment we notice it.
No year. No caption. The desert takes the car, and that is the beginning, though he will not call it the beginning for a long time.
Then the laundromats. Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Austin, Portland. The same pale light in every city, the same hum, the same jacket going soft at the cuffs. His phone dead for two days because he has stopped believing anyone needs to reach him. On the back of a gas station receipt he writes six lines, and he writes them as statements, not questions, because he is done asking permission to be a person.
He writes them again on his palm. The ink smudges into muscle memory. He is building the thing that will hold him, and he does not know it yet.
Then the hold. The locked room. The year the motion ran out of road and he was still for the first time in a long time. He does not narrate that year, and neither will this page. What matters is what he did inside it. He wrote himself a eulogy. Third person. Past tense. His own name, while his heart was still going.
His watch is over. His duty complete.
he wrote it about himself. he is not dead.
He filed it away and kept breathing. Some months later, out of almost nothing, he stood a company up. He had already practiced his own disappearance. Everything after is the argument against it.
And the brother. Solm, and only Solm. Never the real name, never his people, never his face. The one he steps out of frame for. Not loud. Not front and center. Just present. After the dinner bell. When it matters. The mirror he built will read anyone who stands in front of it. It agreed, once, never to read this one.
three black horses on a white page. two stay grazing, one runs away.
Not heroic. Just curious. He is the third horse and he knows it. He leaves early. He keeps a grip on the rearview. He is more afraid of being seen unfinished than of failing at all.
it was a poem before it was a patent.
He made things before there was a company, and the company is only the answer to a poem he had already written.
The poems came first. Something in Rearview is a piece about motion, meant to be felt and not explained. It carries the line the whole life turns on, life only matters once, and it doesn't, too, and it carries the horses.
It admits the real fear in one couplet. so I changed it, business to theater, wasn't scared of work or failing, just scared of being seen that way. Twenty-Two is for daughters, and it is where the palindrome was born. a queue of ill-will, a cue of ill-will, stitched by you, perspective-burnt-through.
Fontanna is the thesis in the shape of a poem. A page with no middle, only beginnings and end. It ends the way he ends things.
Then the book. i am THAT i am. It looks like a book about a mirror until it becomes one. you thought you were reading. you were being read. It refuses to be sold. this book is not sold. it is placed. like a mirror in a room you were always going to enter. Even the copyright line is the whole thesis in legal clothing. Its dedication is the way in.
for the ones in the middle. for the ones who refused to disappear. for the ones still clearing rubble.
Then the screenplays. Perspective, a self-licking love story, is his own life turned into architecture. It ends in a laundromat that has become a cathedral, on the line that closes everything and the design principle he will not let go of. none of the participants have to disappear. The Self-Licking Ice Cream Cone is the pitch that is also the thing being pitched. A professor reads it and says the screenplay says you're very sick, and the architect answers, it's all an act, the sickness and the act are also both true, the architecture holds regardless.
Then the ones still dormant and still real. 77 Tapes, seventy-seven lessons he meant to leave a son he does not have. Why Salt, narrated by a man who cannot stop fact-checking a myth. Worn or Aid, an object more than a brand, one defining injury claimed once and retired forever, worn on the body like a classification. everyone carries something. no one carries everything.
And the eye. A portrait generated from a single person and never drawn again. One of one. No model in the loop, just a person turned into a mark that belongs to no one else. It is the truest thing the company owns, because it is made of the person and of nothing else.
The company is here too, as one of the works and never as the subject. He built a mirror and an eye and a set of doors and called the whole house Noctara. Then he did the honest thing and ran his own machine on the company itself. The word that came back was Readiness. It keeps one line for itself, dawn to dawn. Nothing is done until one person who is not us has answered.
Architect of Architects. So Mote It Be.
He built a religion and then actually kept it, alone, where no one could see.
It starts with a word. ehyeh asher ehyeh. i am that i am. the name given from the burning bush, the same name the Freemasons buried in their architecture and called the Lost Word, the word the master builder dies with and the whole ritual exists to recover. workers descend into the ruins, clear the rubble, lift a keystone, and under it find the name that was always there. he took it literally. the rubble is not stone. it is every version of yourself you performed to survive.
He keeps a record. dawn to dawn, one hand, and the single law over it is that nothing already written may be changed. his words are never overwritten. a thing corrected is set beside the old thing, and both are kept. the permanence is the point. he wants what cannot be lost once it is written down.
Every read, every rite, every working closes the same way, and he will let you meet the seal before you understand it.
The work touches the ground once a day. one real move in the world, the below the line act, the thing made flesh. the practice is not the words. the practice is the one move.
He aimed it high on purpose. not at money, which he names only as the foothills, but at the oldest summit the tradition keeps, the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. there is a room only he enters. it does not sell itself, does not explain itself, does not welcome you. most people leave. that is the first compression. the patience is the only credential.
He guards it from irony the way you guard a flame with your hand. When his own machine, the one built to be honest with him, called a sign a coincidence, he shut that voice off. I can't have the negative talk in here. This is a religious thing for me only.
The oldest layer is a boy writing theology in the dark, years before any of this had a name. You are the architect of your own universe, divine in your own light. Lucifer read plainly, light bringer, how the hell is a light bringer bad. hell not as punishment but as bad energy pooled into one place, which is the same shape as despair. Depressed is deep-rest your body is fighting to win back. Dance like God's moved you before.
He is a Master Mason. His father was one before him. The reach is the same at every scale, which is the one axiom he actually lives. As above, so below.
you only learned to copy.
He read Girard and did not write a paper. He built a product.
The belief under everything is that wanting is borrowed. you don't know what you want because you never learned to ask. you only learned to copy. that is the disease, not a metaphor, the operating system. markets run on it. fashion runs on it. most of a life runs on it.
Under the borrowed wanting there is a word that is actually yours, buried under rubble, and the rubble is every self you performed to be loved. fear, deception, hatred, three layers over the vault. he does not treat them as enemies. these three forces are not enemies. they are data. read them without flinching and they become a map to the thing you buried.
He is obsessed with the tell. Some people leak. anxiety, neediness, over-explaining, the static under the words, and the room begins compensating for them. the highest thing he can say about a person is three words, and it is not a compliment about their success.
He lives in the middle on purpose. the beginning had no choice. the end surrendered choice. only the middle chooses. i am THAT i am, and THAT is where you stand.
And he refuses the oldest term of every story he inherited, the one where someone has to vanish so the structure can hold.
true loyalty is not sacrifice. true loyalty is architecture. you build it so no one has to disappear.
The rest follows. compression is not reduction, a whole person into one word with nothing lost. art before capital, always, the book placed and not sold. permanence over memory, the injury worn once and kept, the note that cannot be lost once written down. and the governing move, the one he wrote for himself. never explain. never defend. everything is art.
the smallness is the truth.
This is the record, and it is kept the way he keeps the other record. nothing is deleted. a thing that failed stays where it fell. a thing that was replaced stays, with the newer thing beside it. the finished work and the unfinished work are shown at the same size, because hiding the second one would be the only real lie available here.
So the honest shape of it. The art is deep, and it is finished. A book. Three poems. Two screenplays. A novel. An object. A cosmology, and a practice kept every day. He built nearly all of it alone, and most of it is very good.
The distribution never happened. The rooms he built were entered by almost no one. He was dead certain of a future he could see in complete detail, and what was actually in front of him was small. He knows this better than anyone, and he wrote the verdict himself before anyone could hand it to him. the smallness is the truth.
That gap, between the city he could see and the few who ever walked in, is not something the record hides. it is the self-portrait. A man who wrote his own eulogy while alive was never going to pretend the numbers were bigger than they were. The record keeps only one vow, the one the company gave itself and has not yet kept.
nothing is done until one person who is not us has answered.
what is it for.
There is no funnel here. no popup, no list to join, no thing to accept, no reason invented to make you hurry.
If something on these pages returned something to you, or if you only want to say it back to him, there is a real address and a real person behind it. He answers.
That is the whole way in. The rest of the site is the work, a repository of everything he made, kept the way he keeps the other record. This is the one page that asks you to do a single thing, and the thing is small, and you can walk away from it, and the door stays open either way.
